What is beauty?

Question a friend asked me:

"If in one community, beauty means flawless skin, but in another community, beauty is defined through a bubbly kind personality, then if beauty is a self constructed idea, then there must be no such a thing as beauty right? considering that opinions can never be proven true. What do you feel about this subject? do you feel beauty exists, why or why not?"

My opinion:

I feel beauty exists in everyone. Everybody has a spark of beauty in them. The alcoholics, the drug addicts, the rapists, the murderers, the terrorists, they all have a spark of beauty deep down inside. I know they may be doing horrible thing's, but EVERYONE has beauty.

Look at the innocence of a child, how they're life is so clean, nothing soiling their reputation yet. That's also beauty. Look at a person who has self harmed before, seeing the scars on their arms. Seeing scars is beauty, because at least they are scars and NOT cuts. You can see how far down into depression they were and now they are stopped the cutting.

Good parents; how they nestle their children in their arms shielding them from all the hurt and pain. Helping them get along. That is beauty. Protecting others, and loving others is beauty. Not judging others is beauty.

To me, the outside is not defined as beauty. Sure you may call a person beautiful. But when you say that do you mean their looks or their personality. I think it should be based on personality. Yes you can call a person beautiful. But you should not call a person ugly just because they don't have the straightest teeth, or the gorgeous hair. Their beauty is deep inside just like everyone elses.

You may think the everyday thing's you do, doesn't define what type of person you are. You may think that an answer to a simple question doesn't define who you are. Here's a question. When you look out the window of a moving vehicle do you look at the reflection in the window, or do you look at what's behind? Some may say both, some may say that they look at the reflection. Some may say that they look at the outside. How does that question define you? If you look at the reflection and only focus on that, then in everyday life you only see what's right before you, and how it affects you. If you only look at the outside then you see others point of view. You see how other's see thing's. If you look at both then you are optimistic. You see both! Now, remember all those little questions you answer on a daily basis? This gets you to think before you speak! This determines how beautiful you are.
